The Development of a Signal Processing

The engineering environment of the 21st century requires skills and capabilities not generally incorporated in the traditional engineering curriculum. This paper discusses the combination of technical and non-technical skills needed by engineers along with presenting an interactive collaboration between two universities to develop some of these additional skills and capabilities. The collaboration is centered on a distributed team-oriented senior level curriculum in Digital Signal Processing that uses the Internet and MATLAB as the primary tools for course exercises and interaction. Descriptions of some of the laboratory exercises for the distance teaming assignments are included, along with a discussion of the overall pedagogical viewpoint.
